MATTRESS OVERVIEW
Bed Features
Mattress Straps
Mattress straps are placed on the furthest corners of the murphy bed when open. The mattress straps will hold your mattress to your bed face while you lower and raise your bed.
No box springs required
The backbone of a Bedder Way Murphy bed is our strut framework. This framework is soundly constructed with kiln-dried, solid poplar struts 1.5" x 1.5". This creates a beam structure which minimizes deflection and produces a framework that supports up to 2,500 lbs.
Our cabinet Murphy beds use a unique mattress installation method that does not adhere to the standard vertical and horizontal Murphy bed mattress specifications.

Mattress Installation
Step 1:
Easily slide your mattress into the bed face. The weight of the mattress keeps the bed down. Without the mattress, the bed will want to return to the closed position.
Step 2:
Pull the two corner straps over the mattress BEFORE making the bed. The straps hold the mattress tight to the bed face when opening and closing the bed.
Step 3:
Tuck in your fitted sheet. When closing your bed, you can leave your sheets, blankets, and comforter in place. Just tuck them in along the mattress so they remain hidden.
Frequently Asked Questions
While the information above is an overview of Murphy bed mattress requirements, we often get questions from people on the finer details. If you don't see your question listed below, check out other common questions or contact us and we'll be happy to assist you.
How much weight can a murphy bed mattress hold?
A Murphy bed mattress can hold up to 2500 lbs. Keep in mind that our Murphy beds are very similar to any normal bed platform. For instance, The Bedder Way's Murphy beds have four points that touch the ground. Additionally, our strut framework distributes your weight evenly across the bed in the same way a box spring works. This ensures the bed's comfort and stability.
Can I use a latex mattress on the murphy bed?
No, latex mattresses cannot be used on Murphy beds. Unlike those with innersprings or memory foam, latex mattresses cannot stand on-end for long periods of time which will result in an inability to operate the bed.
Can I use an air mattress on the murphy bed?
No, you cannot use a blow up air mattress with our Murphy beds. They are not heavy enough to counterbalance our piston lift system. Select comfort mattresses are also not recommended due to their lack of weight.
Can I decorate the space near my murphy bed?
Most of our customers who purchase vertical beds will hang a picture on the wall inside the bed, which makes it more decorative when the bed is down. When using a 12-inch mattress (maximum size) you will have 2 inches of space left inside when the bed is closed. There are plenty of other ways to decorate with a Murphy bed.
